Keeping A Healthy Digestive System


Digestive problems often occur because unhealthy habits and intake of food that is not good for the body. Example of food that is not good for daily intake is processed food that is widely sold in the market. One needs to watch the food they eat because it affects the function of the digestive system. To keep a healthy digestive system, it is important to start following healthy habits and proper diet.

Drinking at 8 glasses of water daily is beneficial to the digestive system because it cleanses it. Water helps the body detoxify by helping kidneys and the digestive system remove body wastes and sends it out of the body. Regular intake of water also helps individuals that are experiencing constipation.

Regular inclusion of vegetables and fruits in one’s diet is very important. It contains all essential vitamins and minerals that are needed by the body for normal function. It is also a rich source of phytonutrients and fiber which facilitates smooth digestion. Fruits and vegetables are healthy foods that aides in digestive system function and it keep the system healthy at all times.

Regular diet must have at least 25 – 35 grams of fiber in order to keep smooth and easy bowel movement. Fiber is very important in the body because it helps in food digestion and promotes easy excretion of feces out of the body, individuals experiencing constipation should increase the amount of fiber in their diet to solve the problem.

Another thing to consider is to maintain an upright position for at least two hours after eating in order to give time for food to go down the intestines for digestion. This also prevents reflux of stomach contents. Chewing of food properly is also essential to prevent aspiration which is dangerous.

Avoiding smoke and excessive alcohol intake keeps digestive system healthy. Smoking can affects digestive system function because it decreases saliva production. Smoking also increases acid content in the stomach and this is not good because it can damage stomach lining and will result later on to stomach ulcer. Alcohol intake can slow down digestion but little amounts can help when one is having heavy meat in a meal.

Maintaining proper body weight according to gender, height and age is very important. People that are underweight or overweight experience some digestive problems most of the time. It is very important that one must observe proper diet and maintain healthy and ideal weight in order to keep a good digestive process.

Exercise regularly in order keep ideal body weight and improve digestion. Metabolism is increased when one does regular exercise and metabolism plays an important role in digestion. If it increases, the systems in the body work properly and if it slows down, all system work also slow down.

One last thing to take not of is to avoid stressful situations. If one experiences too much stress, he or she should take time to calm down and relax to maintain a healthy digestive system. Stress is one of the factors of some digestive problems such ad constipation and stress ulcers.
