LipSense Liquid Lip Color Review – An Essential Addition to Any Makeup Bag?

3.96/5 (26 votes)

It is highly likely that you will have already encountered some of the LipSense advertisements. They seem to be everywhere, after all! Thousands of people have started selling it, bloggers are reviewing it, and around 54 active Facebook groups exist on the product. One thing that can be said about LipSense is that they have a fantastic marketing campaign. But the question really is whether the product is really good.

What Is LipSense?

LipSense is a lipstick product created by SeneGence. They say it is a long-wear (18 hour) lipstick that is kiss-proof, budge-proof, waterproof, and smear-proof. They have patented the three elements of the product: (1) the super-adhesive color formula, (2) the three-layered color process, and (3) the sealing gloss or top coat.

SeneGence understands that every woman is different, and that color is hugely important for their personal preferences. Hence, there are over 70 different colors available, as well as a variety of topcoat gloss selections. These include diamond, glitter, pearl, rose, and matte finishes. Because of the three-step layering process, you can also combine colors and finishes yourself, creating something truly unique.

One of the distinguishing aspects about LipSense is that it contains alcohol (cosmetic grade), providing two benefits:

  1. It stops bacteria from growing in the tubes.
  2. It helps to exfoliate your lips.

According to SeneGence, if you use the product every day for one to four weeks, then your lips will be fully revitalized and restored. Best of all, the product is completely vegan and cruelty-free, which is rare in the world of lipstick.

LipSense is a liquid type of lipstick that is said to be highly durable and virtually unremovable. One color costs $25, but you also have to purchase the lip gloss, which costs a further $20. If you want, you can also buy the lipstick remover, which costs $10.

SeneGence is a multi-level marketing (MLM) company. The product is so popular that many women who have tried it for the first time decided to sign up for the MLM option, promoting it to others. It should be noted that this review will not look into the business opportunity, but it is interesting to know that it is hugely popular and has been running for many years, which certainly says something about the overall quality of the company and its products.

How to Use LipSense

LipSense is different and special because it has a complex layering process. You have to put on at least three lip color coats (two if you use a light color) in order for it to work properly. You then have to gloss it, which moisturizes your lips while locking in the color at the same time. The application process is quite a bit lengthier than that for regular lipsticks, therefore. To properly apply it, you should:

  1. Prepare your lips by cleaning them thoroughly from any leftover products, including lip balm.
  2. Apply three thin coats of LipSense lip color, giving each layer a chance to dry first. Application is done through a brush applicator.
  3. Add your topcoat gloss to hydrate your lips and seal in the color.
  4. Use the Oops! Remover if you need to correct any mistakes.

The Oops! Remover also works as a lipstick remover at the end of the day. You can do without this remover if you want, particularly since it costs $10, but SeneGence obviously recommends that you get it because it makes the task easier.

According to the website, it is vital that the three layers are applied each time, because each layer plays a different role. Specifically:

  • The first layer touches on the pH of the skin, which immediately starts to break down the color. This is why regular lipsticks don’t last as long.
  • The second layer helps to protect the first layer by not being in direct contact with the skin.
  • The third layer provides even more protection, stopping the second layer from shearing through contact with the natural environment, saliva, and friction.

The first layer is gradually broken down by the pH of the skin and the third layer by external factors. The second layer, however, is sandwiched between the two, providing protection for hours.

Does It Really Work?

The big question for many is whether this is truly a lipstick that will not come off no matter how much they kiss, drink, and eat. Reviews have clearly shown that people can indeed drink from white china and find that there are no smudges on the cup. Additionally, it doesn’t become runny nor does it smear, even in hot climates. A quick look on YouTube will reveal thousands of videos of women running their finger across their lips, showing that it does not come off, and those videos appear to be real.

However, will it really last for 18 hours? This is not likely. Most LipSense distributors indicate that you can count on it to last for nine hours. Usually, over the course of the day, the waterline (which is where your lips and the insides of the mouth meet) will start to wear off slightly, slowly coming off altogether. That said, nine hours of perfect stay is just as good, since most people won’t be awake for 18 hours in one day. If need be, you can always apply another layer.

A particular point of interest is the fact that many long stay lipsticks have a tendency to harm the lips. Many will tell you that their lips start to feel painful and chapped. SeneGence claims that LipSense moisturizes and revitalizes the lips instead, and it seems that they are right about that. The alcohol content helps to kill bacteria while at the same time exfoliating the skin on the lips. If you look at the reviews that are abundant, almost all women who use LipSense mention that they have noticed this benefit.

Key Ingredients

SeneGence has listed a number of key ingredients and benefits of LipSense. These are:

  • Denatured alcohol, which is used to deliver the color technology itself, while at the same time creating a bacteria- and germ-free environment
  • Tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) root extract, which is a plum flower herb that naturally calms a person
  • St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) extract, which is a natural antidepressant and mood lifter
  • Linder (Tilia cordata) flower extract, which is a powerful antioxidant as well as being rich in flavonoids
  • Isodinis japonicus extract, which is a fragrant plant with terpenes that have been scientifically proven to soothe the skin
  • Mica, which is a mineral that shines and sparkles
  • Titanium dioxide, which is another earth mineral that thickens the lipstick while at the same time providing UVA and UVB protection

The full list of ingredients is available on the LipSense website. Most importantly, the product does not contain any animal by-products, lead, or wax.

What I Liked About LipSense

  • It is 100% vegan and cruelty free.
  • The addition of cosmetic grade alcohol means the applicator tubes remain free from bacterial contamination. Plus, the alcohol also helps to exfoliate the lips.
  • It has received thousands of positive reviews, the vast majority of which are completely independent and unbiased.
  • While the claim of 18 hour staying power is somewhat exaggerated, the lipstick does indeed stay on, even when drinking, swimming, eating, or kissing.
  • SeneGence is very transparent in terms of the ingredients of the product.
  • The company is well-established and has also created a wealth of other skin care and beauty products.

What I Didn’t Like About LipSense

  • Application of the product is quite a lengthy process.
  • Because of the multiple layers, the lipstick is quite heavy to wear. It is really important that you only apply the thinnest possible coat.
  • You do have to re-gloss your lips quite often.

The Final Verdict

LipSense lasts for hours, offers fantastic quality, and moisturizes your lips at the same time. It comes in a wealth of colors, and you can create something unique by combining it with different glosses. One of the added benefits of buying LipSense is that the company sells through MLM channels. This means that, when you purchase the product, you support not just the profits of the company, but you also help everyday people earn an income and get to build a strong business.

There are many other long-lasting lipsticks out there, many of which do indeed last just as long . However, very few of them are also 100% cruelty-free and vegan, and even fewer that protect and heal your lips, rather than damaging them. It will take you some getting used to this particular brand, not in the least because the three layers make it quite heavy to wear, and the entire application process is quite lengthy. However, once you are over that initial period, you will probably wonder why you ever wore a different lipstick before.

If you want to wear a lipstick that is totally you, creating something unique to your personality and chosen outfit, then LipSense really is the product for you. I 100% recommend it to anyone who wants to look their best while being sustainable and ethical at the same time.

After reading your review I went to the company website and looked at the ingredients for myself. I have a friend selling and wanted to check this product out. You did not begin to cover the ingredients in these products-propylene glycol, synthetic beeswax (sounds like petroleum to me) , propylparaben, PPG-20 Methly Glucose Ether, Parfum, Hydroxypropylcellulose, Butylene Glycol. No thank you. Not for me.

I decided to give this product a try, since I don’t like to carry my lipstick with me and reapply throughout the day. I can not buy into the exfoliates and removes old wax buildup, since I only wear lipstick maybe 2 times per month. Anyway, I also do not like wearing glosses. I tried to order the matte ‘gloss finish’, but was told. . . you really want to start with the glossy gloss as it will moisturize your already damaged lips. Whatever, I’ll just apply enough to ‘set’ the color and not worry about it the rest of the day.

After spending $85 for two colors (dawn rising and fly girl), a glossy gloss and an “oops” remover (that is a pain in the butt to use. . .my Noxzema works much quicker in removal) I gave it a try. I do LOVE the colors I chose, but they literally make me ill throughout the day. My lips constantly taste like there is dried on liquid Dawn dish-soap on my lips! Mostly when I wear the two colors combined. I can deal with the ‘tingle’. . .although a little annoying. . .it goes away. But the taste! :O It is horrible!! I am honestly not impressed and won’t be purchasing the product again. I am shocked I spent $85 to begin with. . .

Ok first of all, there is a 100% satisfaction guarantee policy so the distributor you bought it from HAS to give your money back if you want to return the product. Can’t please everyone lol. Second, do you lick your lips all day or something? I wear LipSense everyday and I never taste it unless I’m literally making out with my boyfriend and he complains about the taste…

My friend and I both purchased this product and we both felt our lips burning during application, leaves a nice ugly line in my bottom lip, the only thing that stayed on for any time. We are contacting our distributor for a refund. This is the most overhyped product I have used in a long time!

Me again, I found this page by looking to see if other people were having the same problems as my friend and I. I read comments like ” yes they have a 100% money back guarantee BUT you won’t be able to get the distributor to return your calls”. So when I called our person Kat and did not get a call right away I thought yep they are right. She did return my call after a few days and was great, she refunded our money and said she understood our concerns and would not try to talk us into sticking with the product. I wanted to give her a positive shout out for being so great! If you are looking for a good distributor give Kat a call at 425-417-1970 and she will help!

I think I will keep from using this product, I bought it and tried it, it burned my lips like fire, smelled like nail polish and worse tastes like nail polish smells! I checked ingredients and did a web search on them and sure enough some of the ingredients are what is used in nail polish! I regret that I wasted my money on this product I cannot use it.

I am in agreement with you – the first coat I applied was burning (not tingling) and the taste was awful. I messaged the rep I purchases from a little bit ago and await to hear but I can honestly say that is 1 product that I will not purchase again.

I find no taste at all. Or build up either and you can but it online for 6 or 7 dollars.

Synthetic beeswax is also used by Lush cosmetics and is nothing to do with petroleum or any petrol byproducts and it is 100% friendly to bees

I am wondering if this is the culprit of my lips, face and neck swelling. I just realized today that I have been swelling since I started using this product… I ran and cleaned it off which took me forever since I am at work and had no makeup remover. wow, I hope this is what happened. these ingredients are nasty

I have been using lipsence for months, I have several different shades. I had told all my friends it was the greatest lip color that I had ever used. Last month I had noticed my lips starting to dry out, then started gradually getting chapped lips and my lips started swelling. My entire top lip swelled up so much it looked like I had an allergic reaction. I immediately stop using lipsence. I had looked up reviews and noticed others have experienced these problems. Very disappointed, and concerned. This is a absolutely true experience.

I have used LipsSense in many colors for over a year. Last month I began getting what I thought was chapped lips and stopped using it because the normal tingle when applying was turning into a major sting/burn upon application. My lips swelled terribly. They cracked open and bled over several days. I looked like I had a botched botox treatment. It took a month for my lips to recover but I hadn’t narrowed it down to the Lipsense as the source since I had introduced a couple other things into my diet around the same time which I also eliminated to cure the swollen lips. So while we were on vacation, this past week, I applied only one layer of Lipsense, which burned horribly. the next morning the swollen lips were back with a vengeance. There is no doubt in my mind now that the culprit is the Lipsense and I will never use it again. Ugh

I’m so glad I read your post! My lips started drying out about 1 month ago. I’ve only been wearing the gloss lately, but I wear it religiously. I use the lip balm every night. I have been perplexed as to what was happening with my lips. I’m going to stop using the products altogether and see what happens. I know that my distributor will readily refund me 100% of my money. She is superb.

UPDATE: My distributor has agreed to refund my money, but I am apparently being charged a 10% “re-stocking fee”. I sent her a copy of literature regarding allergic reactions to beeswax. (There is synthetic beeswax in the Lipsense glosses. I KNOW they’re vegan, they love bees, blah, blah, blah…) I suspect it’s the company that’s giving her a difficult time, but I find it very frustrating to be doubted when I tell somebody that I am experiencing an allergic reaction. It happened. ***I had been using Lipsense for 10 months when this reaction occurred, and obviously I’ve been using lip balms for many, many years.*** There is beeswax in virtually every lip balm. You have to be very, very careful.

I’ve been wearing it for 2 years but I kept telling my daughter I thought maybe I was having a reaction but found it odd. I loved the product and colors but noticed my lips were constantly dry. My tongue started to feel funny from time to time and feel like it was slightly swollen and I would feel very thirsty. Has anyone else experienced this?

January 30, 2019 10:23 PM

I have used it for 2 weeks and my lips started chapping and swollen even under my nose was itching it has been 2 weeks since i have quit using it and my lips are just now getting back to normal.

I bought my first Lipsense “Napa”. It took me 5 weeks to get it due to being “out of stock”and bugging my Rep. I finally get it. The first day I applied on the waterline my lips burned. I was told this was normal. The 2nd day my lips were on fire. I removed it immediately. The 3rd day my bottom lip where water line is I had multiple blisters. I took a pic and sent to Rep. She stated that that has ever happened before. I told her she might check with her superior to find out for “product awareness” and I would like a refund. She said she wasn’t allowed to give refund only exchange for another product. Seriously? So as my mouth continued to get worse and lack of response from my rep I called another rep out of state who happened to be in Virginia . I actually found her on Pinterest. She stated that 5% using lipsense has an allergic reaction. It has to do with TH Levels in the individuals body. Lipsense has a refund policy”no questions asked”. She said for me to have my rep call her and she would be happy to talk to her. She felt my rep had been misinformed about policy. My final blister is dried up after 3 weeks of pain. I ask my rep to contact the rep in Virginia. My rep just keeps saying they never heard of an allergic reaction. I still have not received my refund and my rep doesn’t respond unless I contact her. She stated she has to make a sale to pay me my $50. Had she followed protocol instead ignoring the issue this all could of been resolved. Lipsense looks beautiful on young to middle aged women. I’m not so sure it’s for the older woman. I’m 68 and I think with wrinkles around your lips your not getting the same lasting affect as on younger lips.

I too had a reaction and when I contacted my rep she said this never happened. I never got cold sores but developed them after using LipSense. My lips cracked and bled. I discontinued using and after a lot of messages finally got my refund. I continue to have peeling lips with swelling, with I have not have before and hopes it gets better soon.

In my case, the so called exfoliation process is just the “shelac” that is flaking off after a few hours. Not buying into the “years of wax build up” line. If it was exfoliation happening, I would have no lips after using this for 2 months. I will use it a couple times a week to use it up (I’m a tightwad and don’t like to waste something I have paid a lot for). It does look good for about 2 hours.

Agree with your comment. I have tried numerius suggestions to extend the wear but I am lucky to go 3 or 4 hours before the lipstick actually starts to look blotchy and sometimes flakes off. In my opinion, it’s not worth the money.

After using Lipsense, my lips burned so badly…I am now on day three of what is a chemical burn. I don’t want a refund more like a medical bill payment.

I just purchased this product and I already regret it . It’s totally not for me my lips are burning, it taste funny and it’s overpriced. I can’t believe I bought this.

I was required to have this lipstick for dance team and let me just say it’s just horrible! This product isn’t pigmented at all and requires 5 layers just so that the color would pop out. In addition, of the pigmentation, this lipstick also burns your mouth and gets worse every time you put a new layer. Yes, this lipstick brand doesn’t smudge but it’s not worth the burning sensation, horrible smell, and horrible pigment.

I had purchased LipSense from 2 ladies who were offering “discounts” – one at almost 1/2 off and one at 15% off. I wore these exclusively for a week – my lips were burned. Not chapped , burned. They swelled and were painful. I immediately stopped and threw everything away. Then, a few days later, I get a cold sore. For me, LipSense isn’t worth it and I fear I have permanent scars on my bottom lip.
