3.5/5 (12 votes)

We all have problems remembering a name or a fact at times or doing something almost idiotic like putting the remote control in the fridge because we were absent-minded. But, as we age, we fear that we’ll lose our precious memories and the ability to remember new experiences in the future. So, we’re looking for whatever remedies we can find that can prolong the life of our brain cells. Even students and busy young professionals are looking for ways to keep their minds sharp and focused.

Prevagen, a dietary supplement derived from jellyfish, promises to decrease brain cell and boost your memory significantly. Does it really work or is it just a scam designed to trick people?

Let’s find out!

What Is Prevagen?

Most of the cells in our bodies reproduce at a non-stop rate. But, as we age, so do our cells until they eventually stop dividing and die. Quincy Bioscience, the developers of Prevagen, claim to have found a solution to reduce the death of brain death by as much as 50%.

Prevagen is a health supplement that is clinically proven to minimize age-related memory decline. In addition to improving memory, Prevagen also claims to provide additional cognitive support, boost your energy, and make you feel full of life again. It can also help you get increased thinking abilities and loss of foggy brain.

These are all bold claims that are sure to attract a person who feels like they’re slowly losing their normal cognitive processes.

So, can a health supplement whose main ingredient comes from a jellyfish really support your brain’s health? To answer this question, we need to understand first how Prevagen works.

How Does Prevagen Work?

Every day we lose tens of thousands of brain cells, which can eventually affect our memory and
cognitive functions, especially after the age of 40. That happens mainly because our body loses the ability to produce and maintain a protein that plays a crucial role in the health of our brain.

When the body doesn’t have enough of this special protein, the calcium levels become extremely high, damaging the brain cells.

Prevagen contains 10mg of apoaequorin (or 20mg in the case of Extra Strength formula), a protein derived from the Aequorea jellyfish that has been shown to support brain cell activity. As a result, Prevagen supplements can replace this protein, regulate the amount of calcium that gets to your brain, and decrease cellular death.

The Ingredients

The main ingredient in Prevagen is apoaequorin, a calcium binding protein derived from the Aequorea jellyfish found in the Pacific Ocean. As mentioned above, this compound can help regulate the calcium levels in our body. Most people associate calcium with bone health, but as it turns out, it plays an essential role in our brain function too.

The presence of calcium can prevent ischemic cell death and reduce the effects of cognitive dysfunction.

Prevagen also contains sodium, magnesium, acetic acid, and white rice flour.

Is There Any Research to Backup the Claims?

According to the company, Prevagen is the result of more than 15 years of research and clinical studies. This claim is not unusual. Most nutritional supplement companies claim that their pills are backed up by years of research, but few can point to at least one conclusive study.

That’s not the case with Prevagen.

On their website, you can find three studies that prove the effectiveness of this memory-boosting supplement.

In a 2014 study completed by the company, 218 men and women, ages between 40 and 91, were given either Prevagen or a placebo pill. The subject’s memory was tested regularly. The study pointed that those who received Prevagen showed significantly better results in areas such as memory, concentration, and cognitive functions.

Another study found that people taking Prevagen showed remarkable improvement regarding memory. Bear in mind, though, that the results of the study were quantified through self-assessed questionnaires. In other words, the subjects didn’t participate in a controlled, clinical study, but were asked a few questions about their experience with Prevagen.

How Should You Take Prevagen?

According to the instructions listed on the label, it’s best to take Prevagen in the morning to allow the protein to enter the bloodstream and improve your brain functions throughout the day.

When you take the pill in the morning, you can expect to notice a boost in energy and heightened cognitive abilities.

How Long Until It Works?

According to the clinical studies, it takes around three months for this health supplement to show any noticeable effects. However, the effectiveness of Prevagen also depends on the type of cognitive issues you’re trying to fix or how severe your memory impairment is.

Prevagen also comes with a 30 days money back guarantee. But, here’s the twist: you need to wait for at least 90 days for any significant changes. So, if at the end of these three months you don’t notice any improvement, you can only get your money back on just one of the bottles you’ve bought.

How Much Does It Cost?

At $59.95, Prevagen is a bit on the pricey side. However, it’s worth noting that unlike other memory-boosting supplements, this one actually has a few clinical studies to support its claims.

Is It Safe?

As to our knowledge, there haven’t been any reports of severe side effects associated
with taking this supplement. However, some specialists have shown concerns about the effects long-term use might have on bones since Prevagen contains a calcium-binding protein. So, if you suffer from a bone-related disease, such as osteoporosis, then it would be best to talk with your doctor before taking this supplement.

Conclusion

The jury is still out when it comes to establishing the effectiveness of this protein. On the upside, Prevagen comes with rather solid clinical evidence to support its claims. On the downside, it is pretty pricey, and it can take a while to see any significant changes in your cognitive functions. Overall, Prevagen seems like a legit memory-boosting supplement that is worth your attention.

I am starting to get old and have been getting forgetful too often lately and want to avoid that getting worse. Purchased this to see if it will help. The pills a good size that are easy to swallow.

Although I have been taking it long enough to be sure, I am encouraged by my experience so far. My short term memory does seem to be getting better. Been a while since I forgot where I left my keys! I will keep using this for a few months to see if the results are real or just my imagination.

I bought a bottle of Prevagen just out of curiosity. I’m not sure if it’s just a placebo affect, but the extra strength version really did seem to lead to a noticeable improvement to my focus, mental acuity and short term memory and I no longer felt that brain fog feeling I sometimes experience in the middle of the day.

It’s kind of expensive though…
